SYMPTOMS

When you use the Native Image Generator (Ngen.exe) in managed code on a computer that is running the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, a regeneration of the 32nd Ngen image may not trigger a recompilation of the Ngen image. Additionally, an invalid Ngen image may load and run in the process.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.

To work around this problem, reconstruct all Ngen images on the computer whenever an assembly that includes an Ngen image is regenerated. All Ngen images are regenerated when the regeneration process runs the following command:

ngen update /force
