SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia, the Help screen is displayed when you click Read Aloud on the Tools menu.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Text-to-Speech components are corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, uninstall Encarta Encyclopedia, restart the computer by using a clean-boot procedure, reinstall Encarta Encyclopedia, and then restart the computer in Normal mode. To do this, follow the steps in this section.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Part 1: Uninstall Encarta Encyclopedia

  1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. Click Encarta Encyclopedia, and then click Add/Remove.
  3. In the resulting dialog box, click Remove, and then click OK.
  4. Follow the instructions to complete the removal process.

Part 2: Start the computer by using a clean-boot procedure

  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process SYSTEM.INI File
    • Process WIN.INI File
    • Load Startup Items
    Make sure that the Load System Services check box is selected.
  4. Click the Services tab.
  5. Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  6. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart the computer.
  7. Log on to the computer as an administrator.

Part 3: Reinstall Encarta Encyclopedia

  1. Insert Encarta Encyclopedia disc 1 into the CD drive or DVD drive.
  2. Exit the Setup program.
  3. Locate and open the following folder on the disc:

    AREF\Speech

  4. Double-click MSTTSF22.exe.
  5. Double-click SPCHAPI.exe.
  6. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
  7. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Install.
  8. Follow the instructions to complete the installation process.
  9. Start Encarta.
  10. To verify that the Read Aloud command works as expected, click Read Aloud on the Tools menu.

Part 4: Restart the computer in Normal mode

  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  2. In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Normal Startup.
  3. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  4. Restart the computer.
