SYMPTOMS
When you try to apply a Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) software update, you are prompted by a dialog box to send an error report to Microsoft. The text of this dialog box is similar to the following:
Most of the time, this dialog box does not indicate a crash in the installer. Instead, the Send Error dialog box appears because the installer detects that the software update that you are running corresponds to a different version of MDAC than the version that is actually installed on the computer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, apply the correct software update for the version of MDAC that is actually running on the computer. To determine what version of MDAC is installed, we recommend that you run the Component Checker utility. For more information, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
You should select a software update that is appropriate for your configuration. The file name of the software update depends on the operating system and the version of MDAC that is installed.

---|---|
MDAC 2.5 Service Pack 3 (SP3) | MDAC253- |

MORE INFORMATION
Why error reporting occurs
Frequently, critical MDAC software updates are selected for you by an administrator or by one of several automated deployment tools. These tools include logic that lets the system determine the version of the software update for a particular issue that should be offered to a computer because of its configuration. The error-reporting mechanism is designed to help Microsoft make sure that this logic is working correctly. The error-reporting mechanism also helps Microsoft quickly discover and correct any problems with the logic.
What data is sent
If you click What data does this report contain? in the dialog box, you receive technical details about the data that is submitted. The software update installer sends logs of its attempts to run. These logs include information about MDAC binaries and MDAC-related registry keys that the installer found when it tried to update the computer.
