SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the system stops responding during high disk activity.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a deadlock occurs in the Ntfs.sys file that is the driver for the NTFS File System.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, disable disk auditing on the computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
