SYMPTOMS

When you are using a distributed application, you experience one of the following symptoms:

  • The application stops responding.
  • The network connection fails. The client application cannot communicate with the server application.


These symptoms occur when the following conditions are true:

  • The distributed application is using the Network Dynamic Data Exchange (NetDDE) protocol.
  • Microsoft Security Update MS04-031 is installed on the computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because there is a problem in the Netdde.exe file that is introduced in Microsoft Security Update MS04-031.

RESOLUTION
