SYMPTOMS
When you are using a distributed application, you experience one of the following symptoms:
- The application stops responding.
- The network connection fails. The client application cannot communicate with the server application.
These symptoms occur when the following conditions are true:
- The distributed application is using the Network Dynamic Data Exchange (NetDDE) protocol.
- Microsoft Security Update MS04-031 is installed on the computer.

CAUSE
This problem occurs because there is a problem in the Netdde.exe file that is introduced in Microsoft Security Update MS04-031.
