SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

  • A 64-bit Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based master browser computer provides a browse list to client computers.
  • The master browser computer name is 15 characters long or the browse list on the 64-bit Domain Master Browser is incomplete and never synchronizes with the segment master browsers.

In this scenario, client computers receive the following error message when they try to use the browse list or a network browser to obtain a list of remote computers in a domain or in a workgroup:

Duplicate name exists on the network

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of an error in the Netapi32.dll file.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, make sure that the master browser computer name contains less than 15 characters.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
