SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. In a Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 e-mail message, you click a link that uses the stssync protocol (stssync:// URL). This link links to a list that is located in a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services site or in a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 site. In this scenario, the SharePoint list is not opened. Additionally, you do not receive an error message or anything else that indicates why the SharePoint list was not opened.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the link to the SharePoint list that is located in a Windows SharePoint Services site contains a long list name or a long site name. When this issue occurs, the URL may exceed the 1500-byte URL limit.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Use alternate access mapping

To work around this issue, use alternate access mapping. For information about alternate access mapping, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

For more information about how to work with alternate access mappings in SharePoint Portal Server, see the "Managing Alternate Access Mappings" topic in the "Administration" section of the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Administration Guide (Administrator's Help.chm). This guide is located in the Docs folder in the root of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 CD.

Method 2: Shorten the path of the SharePoint list URL

To shorten the path of the SharePoint list URL, move the SharePoint list to a folder that is in a higher level of the SharePoint site folder hierarchy.
