SYMPTOMS
After you deploy a Microsoft Windows XP-based Sysprep image, you may notice the following issues:
- Network adapter settings that are set before you capture the Sysprep image are missing. Examples of these settings include network names and service set identifiers (SSIDs).
- Custom hardware profiles that enable or disable devices are missing or have been reset.
CAUSE
This issue occurs because the Sysprep tool must reset certain hardware-specific settings or profiles before it deploys a Sysprep image to a new computer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, you have to reconfigure the network adapter settings and the hardware profiles after you deploy the Sysprep image.

Network adapters are assigned a unique instance when they are installed on a computer. When the Sysprep image is deployed to a computer that has new hardware, the Sysprep MiniSetup creates a new instance for the new network adapter. You cannot associate the old network card settings to the new instance, especially when there are multiple adapters in the computer. Custom hardware profiles are also specific to a computer and cannot remain the same from computer to computer.
Steps to reproduce the issue
- Install Windows XP.
- Set the SSID or set up custom hardware profiles.
- Run the Sysprep tool.
- Capture the image.
- Deploy the image to a new computer that has different hardware adapters.
- Start the image.
- Verify the adapter settings and hardware profiles.
