SYMPTOMS

When a Microsoft Office 2003 program is started by another program that is running under a non-interactive account, such as the SYSTEM account, the Office 2003 program unexpectedly quits. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Office program has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.
Please tell Microsoft about this problem.

RESOLUTION

This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 3.

You may also experience this problem with other Office programs that have version 11.0.6568.0 of Mso.dll. These programs may not be listed in the "Applies to" section.

You may also experience this issue when you automate the task of starting an Office 2003 program by using any one of the following means:

  • A script that is running under another service, such as ASP running under Internet Information Services (IIS)
  • CScript code that is running from a scheduled task
  • COM+ code that is running from a notification service such as Message Queuing (also known as MSMQ)

In these scenarios, you may also receive the following error message:
