SYMPTOMS

When you try to play a multiplayer game in Microsoft Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors, you may receive the following error message:

You have an old version of Age 2 Expansion. Click on Go To Downloads to get the latest patch installed.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:

  • The latest Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors update is not installed on the computer.
  • The game files that are installed on the computer are corrupted.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one or more of the following methods in the order that they appear in.

Method 1: Install the latest game update

You can download and install the latest Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors game update from the Microsoft game Web site. For more information about how to download the latest game update, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

If you still experience the issue, go to Method 2.

Method 2: Remove and then reinstall Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors

  1. Rename the SaveGame folder.

    Note You must save all the game files before you rename the SaveGame folder. If you do not want to keep your existing saved game files, go to step 2.

    To rename the SaveGame folder in Microsoft Windows XP, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
    2. In the Search Companion dialog box, click All files and folders.
    3. In the All or part of the file name box, type SaveGame, and then click Search.
    4. In the right pane, locate the SaveGame folder that is associated with Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors, right-click the SaveGame folder, and then click Copy.
    5. Minimize all the windows, right-click anywhere on the desktop, and then click Paste.

    You will now see the SaveGame folder on the desktop.

    To rename the SaveGame folder in Microsoft Windows 98 or in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
    2. In the Named box, type SaveGame, and then click Search.
    3. In the right pane, locate the SaveGame folder that is associated with Age of Empires II: The Conquerors, right-click the SaveGame folder, and then click Copy.
    4. Minimize all the windows, right-click anywhere on the desktop, and then click Paste.
    You will now see the SaveGame folder on the desktop.
  2. Remove Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors from the computer. To do this, follow these steps.

    Note If you have Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors and Microsoft Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings installed on the computer, you must remove Age of Empires II: The Conquerors and then remove Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings before you remove Microsoft Age of Empires.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. In the Currently installed programs list, locate and then click Microsoft Age of Empires II. Click Change/Remove.

      Note On Windows 98 or on Windows Millennium Edition, click the Install/Uninstall tab. In the list of installed programs, double-click Microsoft Age of Empires II, and then click Uninstall.
    3. Follow the instructions that appear in the wizard to complete the removal process.
  3. Remove the Age of Empires II folder. To remove the Age of Empires II folder, follow these steps:
    1. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
    2. In Windows Explorer, locate and then click the following folder: '

      C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games

      Note This is the default path where Age of Empires II is installed. This path may vary on the computer depending on your configuration.
    3. In the right pane, right-click Age of Empires II, and then click Delete.
    4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    5. Quit Windows Explorer.
  4. Restart the computer by using a clean boot procedure.

  5. Remove the temporary files from the Temp folder. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Windows Explorer.
    2. Locate and then click the following folder:

      C:\Windows\Temp

      Note If you have the Microsoft Windows operating system installed on a different drive, the drive letter C will change accordingly.
    3. On the Edit menu, click Select All, and then press DELETE.
    4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
    5. Quit Windows Explorer.
    6. Click Start, click Run, type %Temp% in the Open box, and then click OK to open the Temp folder for the current user.
    7. On the Edit menu, click Select All to select all the files and the folders in the Temp folder.
    8. On the File menu, click Delete to remove all the files and the folders in the Temp folder.
  6. Reinstall Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Insert the CD into the CD or DVD drive of the computer.

      Note If the Setup program does not start automatically, click Start, click Run, and then type cddrive:\aoesetup to install Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings or type cddrive:\aocsetup to install Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors in the Open box, and then click OK. In this command, cddrive represents the drive letter of the CD drive.
    2. Click Install, and then click Continue.
    3. Follow the instructions that appear in the Setup Wizard to install the game.
    4. After you install the game, use Method 1 to download and to install the latest update for Age of Empires II Expansion: The Conquerors.
