SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service stops responding after some time in Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. If you restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, the problem is resolved. However, the problem occurs again periodically.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by the overflow of a counter that tracks Directory Service Access (DSAccess) queries that were made by the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service process.

RESOLUTION

Prerequisites

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply the hotfix. However, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service and all dependent services will be restarted.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service stops responding after the number of DSAccess queries equals 2,147,483,647 (hexadecimal: 7fffffff). On an Exchange Server 5.5 server that is under medium to heavy load, the counter is estimated to overflow in a period of 40 to 60 days. On an Exchange server that is not under heavy load, the counter will overflow after a longer period.
