SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

  • You modify the Microsoft iSCSI Install package on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.
  • After you make these changes, you do not restart the computer.
  • You then make additional changes.

In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:

The specified service has been marked for deletion.

iSCSI installation did not complete.
Windows has been partially updated and may not work properly.

After you receive this message, you may be unable to start the computer. You may also receive a Stop error message that is similar to the following when you restart a computer that is running Windows 2000 Server:

STOP 0x0000007B (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
INVALID_BOOT_DEVICE

This error indicates that Windows has lost access to the system partition.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the computer was not restarted after the first changes were made to the iSCSI Install package.

For example, this problem may occur if the following conditions occur in the order that they are listed:

  1. You install the iSCSI Install package by using the following options:
    • Initiator Service
    • Software Initiator
    • Microsoft MPIO Multipathing Support for iSCSI
  2. You restart the computer.
  3. You reinstall the iSCSI Install package, and you do not use the options in step 1.
  4. You do not restart the computer.
  5. You reinstall the iSCSI Install package, and you use the options in step 1 again.
  6. You restart the computer.


RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem, restart the computer after you modify the Microsoft iSCSI Install package.

To resolve this problem if you cannot start the computer, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Use the Last Known Good Configuration startup option

To use the Last Known Good Configuration startup option, follow these steps:

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Press F8 when you receive the following message at the character-based menu that displays the operating system choices:

    Please select the operating system to start

  3. In the Windows Advanced Options menu, select the Last Known Good Configuration startup option, and then press ENTER.
