APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Digital Image Pro 9

SYMPTOMS

You cannot download images from your digital camera directly to Microsoft Digital Image Pro 9.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  • The camera does not support the TWAIN standard for transferring images to a computer.
  • The universal serial bus (USB) camera that is plugged into the USB hub cannot communicate with the Digital Image Pro 9 program because of an insufficient power supply.
  • The digital camera stores images in non-intuitive folder paths. You must specify the path that is appropriate for the model of the camera that you use.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.

Method 1: Verify for TWAIN compatibility

The Digital Image Pro 9 program requires that the camera be TWAIN compliant to communicate with it. To determine whether this is the case, visit the manufacturer's Web site. Or, contact the manufacturer of your digital camera to inquire if an updated, TWAIN-compatible driver is available for the camera.

If your camera is not TWAIN compatible, or if the TWAIN driver for the camera is not available, follow these steps to open images from the digital camera in Digital Image Pro 9:

  1. To download the images from the camera, use the software program that is provided with the digital camera.
  2. Save the images in the My Pictures folder on your computer in a common image file format, such as JPEG, that is supported by Digital Image Pro 9.
  3. Use Digital Image Pro 9 to open the images.

Note For instructions about how to use the software program that is provided with your digital camera, contact the manufacturer of the digital camera.

Method 2: Verify whether the USB camera that is plugged into the USB hub communicates with Digital Image Pro 9

Make sure that the camera is plugged correctly into the USB hub. If your camera cannot communicate with Digital Image Pro 9, plug the camera directly into the USB port on the computer.

Method 3: Verify the path that your camera uses to store the images

Your camera uses a folder to store images on your computer. The path of the folder depends on the make and model of the camera that you use. The paths for most cameras are listed in the following steps that describe how to download images directly to Digital Image Pro 9.

Note If you cannot download images to Digital Image Pro 9 by using the following steps, you must download the images by using the software that is provided with the camera, save the images on your computer, and then open the images by using Digital Image Pro 9.

  1. Open Digital Image Pro 9.
  2. On the File menu, point to Get Picture From, and then click Digital Camera.
  3. In the Digital Camera file browser window, click the drive that corresponds to your camera in the Select a camera or drive list.
  4. Click Yes under After downloading your pictures, do you want to batch edit them in Mini Lab?, and the click Download.
  5. The file browser opens and displays the images that you downloaded from the camera.

    The path where the images are stored varies, depending on the model of the camera. The paths for most cameras are as follows:
    • ==== Canon ====

      Canon digital cameras store images in the following folder:

      \DCIM\100_MMDD

      In this folder name, MM is the month and DD is the date. For example, you will find images that are shot on December 23 in \DCIM\100_1223.

    • ==== Kodak ====

      Kodak digital cameras store images in the following folder:

      \Picture Card\DCIM\100ModelNo

      In this folder name, ModelNo is the model number of the camera. For example, KodakCX6200 stores images in \Picture Card\DCIM\1006200.

    • ==== Nikon ====

      Nikon digital cameras store images in the following folder:

      \DCIM\Nikon_100

    • ==== Olympus ====

      Olympus digital cameras store images in the following folder:

      \DCIM\100_olymp

    • ==== Toshiba ====

      Toshiba digital cameras store images in the following folder:

      \DCIM\100Toshi

    After you locate the folder where the images are stored, select an image, and then click OK.

    Note You can select more than one image. To do this, press and hold down CTRL, click the images that you want to open, and then click OK. To select all images, hold down CTRL + A, and then click OK.
  6. The images that you selected in step 5 are opened in Mini Lab.
  7. After you modify the images, click Save as.
  8. In the Batch Edit dialog box, click Save to destination folder, and then click Browse.
  9. Locate the folder where you want to save the images. Or, click Make New Folder to create a new folder.
  10. Type a name for the new folder, and then click OK.
  11. Select the date format in the Date and Time list.
  12. Type a base name and set a counter for the images.

    For example, click MM-DD in the Date and Time list, type Birthday in the + Basename box, and then select 000000 (6 digit) in the + Counter list. If you had created the images on May 12, the images will be saved as 0512Birthday000001.jpg.

    After you select the date format, base name, and counter, a sample file name of the images is displayed in the Batch Edit dialog box.
  13. Click to select the Delete original files from their current folders check box if you want to delete the images from the camera. Then, click OK.
  14. A progress indicator appears as your images are saved. Click OK when all the images are saved.
  15. Click Done or Cancel to close Mini Lab.
  16. The files that you downloaded from the camera will appear in your file tray. You may modify the images individually or close the program.

    Note To view the file tray, click Files on the standard toolbar.

If you want to open the images that you downloaded from your camera, follow these steps:

  1. Open Digital Image Pro 9.
  2. On the File menu, click Open, and then locate the folder where you stored your images.
  3. Select the images that you want to open in Digital Image Pro 9, and then click OK.
  4. The images are displayed in the file tray.
  5. Select the image that you want to view or modify by clicking the image in the file tray.

Note If you cannot view the images after you have successfully downloaded them from your camera, you may have a corrupted user account. If this is the case, you must create a new user account by using administrator permissions, log on as the new user, and then download the images from your camera.
