Article ID: 905676

Article Last Modified on 11/2/2005

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2004 for Mac

SYMPTOMS

You install Microsoft PowerPoint 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2 (SP2). When you start PowerPoint 2004 for the first time, you receive the following error message:

Missing Default Fonts:
The following fonts are unavailable on your computer. PowerPoint will replace
these fonts with similar fonts, or you can reinstall the fonts.
MS PGothic
PMingLiu
Simsun
Gulim

If you open a presentation that uses these missing fonts, other fonts may be substituted for the missing fonts. If another user logs on to the computer and then starts PowerPoint for the first time, the user may receive the same error message.

If you click to select the Don't show me this again check box, you will not receive the error message again when you open a presentation. However, some of the text in the presentation may not appear as you expect.

Note The last three fonts that are listed in the error message do not appear with their English names in Roman characters. These fonts appear in non-Roman characters that are appropriate to the language version of PowerPoint 2004 for Mac.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions is true:

  • The Office 2004 for Mac Setup program installs the fonts to the Font folder for the current user. However, when the current user starts Office 2004 for Mac for the first time, the Mac OS X operating system does not register the fonts for use by the currently loaded user profile. This problem does not occur in the following versions of Mac OS X:
    • Mac OS X 10.4
    • Mac OS X 10.4.1
    • Mac OS X 10.4.2
  • The fonts that were installed by Office 2004 for Mac were disabled by using Font Book or some other font management tool.
  • The fonts that were installed by Office 2004 for Mac were deleted from the Fonts folder. Typically, the Fonts folder is in the following location:

    Mac_HD/Users/username/Library/Fonts

RESOLUTION

If the fonts were not disabled or deleted, log off and then log on to the computer. Alternatively, restart the computer. Both of these actions close and then reload your user profile. Therefore, the fonts will be correctly registered in the user profile. When you restart PowerPoint 2004, you should not receive the error message.

If the fonts were disabled or deleted from the Fonts folder, reenable or reinstall the fonts.

Note All users on the computer must use this resolution when they start PowerPoint 2004 for the first time.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
