CAUSE

These problems occur if WMI is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the error that occurs when you try to remove the toolkit, let the program finish removing the toolkit. Next, perform the "Reinstall Windows Management Instrumentation" procedure, and then perform the "Uninstall cleanup" procedure.

Reinstall Windows Management Instrumentation

To resolve the error that occurs during installation, you must perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP. For more information about how to do this, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Uninstall cleanup

After you reinstall WMI, you must delete three scheduled tasks that the program-removal process could not remove without WMI. These tasks were created by Windows Disk Protection to perform the critical updates process. To delete these scheduled tasks, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type control schedtasks, and then click OK.
  2. Select all three of the tasks that were created by the Windows Disk Protection tool. These tasks are typically named At1, At2, and At3.
  3. Press DELETE, and then click YES to confirm the deletion.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
