SYMPTOMS
When you copy formatted text from one document (the source document) that was created in Microsoft Word 2002 and then paste the text to another document (the destination document) in Microsoft Office Word 2003 or in Word 2002, the text that was formatted with a paragraph style is formatted with a character style.
For example, when you view the style name in the destination document, the style name may be similar to one of the following examples:
Heading 1,Heading 1 Char
Heading 1,Heading 1 Char Char
Heading 1,Heading 1 Char Char Char
Additionally, if you look in the Modify Style dialog box, the Style type box may contain Paragraph and Character.
CAUSE
These symptoms may occur if all the following conditions are true:
- The text that you copy from the source document contains text that is formatted with a paragraph style and text that is formatted with a character style.
- The text that you copy from the source document includes only a part of the text from a paragraph.
- You paste the text to a paragraph in a destination document that is already formatted with a paragraph style that has the same name as the paragraph style in the source document.
Note These symptoms are not the result of a virus, of spam ware, or of document corruption. If you experience this issue in a document or in a template, this issue does not cause any forms of document corruption that may be found in the same document or template.
RESOLUTION
How to obtain the hotfix

Notes about this hotfix
- This hotfix does not fix an existing document that exhibits these symptoms.
- This hotfix fixes these symptoms only in new documents after you apply this hotfix.
- This hotfix does not fix these symptoms if you paste text from an existing document that exhibits these symptoms to a new document after you apply this hotfix.
- Word 2003 users may see the same behavior if they open a document that was created in Word 2002 before the hotfix was applied. These symptoms occur with a newly created document in Word 2003 only if the following condition is true:
- The newly created document in Word 2003 contains edits that were imported from a Word 2002 document that exhibited these symptoms before the hotfix was applied.
WORKAROUND
Currently, there is no workaround for existing documents that already have this issue. The hotfixes and service pack releases prevent the issue from occurring in new documents.
You may be able to create a macro solution to remove the unwanted styles. However, the macro would have to be customized for each unique situation. You cannot create a global macro solution because "Char" could also be spelled as "Car" or as other words in other languages.
Any solution to fix the issue in existing documents requires that the source document be re-created from scratch to make sure that the formatting is not carried over to the destination document.
