SYMPTOMS

When a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003-aware virus scanner scans the Exchange store, you may experience one or both of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty accessing e-mail messages or attachments.
  • Poor performance on the server that is running Exchange Server 2003.

Additionally, it is difficult and time-consuming for support professionals to isolate Virus Scanning Application Programming Interface (VSAPI)-related issues on the Exchange store.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

After you install this hotfix, additional tracing is added to the virus scanning API in the Exchange store. This additional tracing breaks down the virus scanning process into steps.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Restart requirement

You have to restart the Information Store Service after you apply this software update.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other software updates.
