INTRODUCTION

This article discusses the current compatibility issues that occur between the following Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac programs and the Mac OS X Tiger operating system (Mac OS X 10.4):

Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac is a very complex program that intensively relies on the Mac OS X operating system. Any changes that are made to the Mac OS X operating system may affect Virtual PC for Mac programs.

Issues that affect both versions of the Virtual PC for Mac programs when they are installed on a computer that is running the Mac OS X Tiger operating system

Issue Description
The Virtual Switch network does not work. When you use Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1.1 or version 7.01 with the Mac OS X Tiger operating system, you can only use the Shared networking option for networking.
The Virtual PC Addition Dock proxy programs do not work. When you try to start a computer that is running a Microsoft Windows-based program, the corresponding Dock icon does not appear in the Dock.
The Dock Start menu does not work. When you install a Virtual PC for Mac program on a computer that is running the Mac OS X Tiger operating system, the Start menu is not installed in the Dock. However, the programs are still available.
The external floppy disk drive is not recognized. When you use Virtual PC for Mac version 6.1.1 or version 7.01 with the Mac OS X Tiger operating system, you cannot use external floppy disk drives because they are not captured in the Mac OS X Tiger operating system.

Issues that affect Virtual PC for Mac 7.0.1 when it is installed on a computer that is running the Mac OS X Tiger operating system

Issue Description
You receive security error messages during the installation of Virtual PC for Mac 7.0.1. When you try to install Virtual PC for Mac 7.0.1, you receive security error messages. After you cancel these security error messages, the installation finishes.
The Uninstall Virtual PC program unexpectedly quits. When you run the Uninstall Virtual PC program, the program unexpectedly quits.

Issue that affects Virtual PC for Mac 6.1.1 when it is on a computer that is running the Mac OS X Tiger operating system

Issue Description
Virtual PC for Mac 6.1.1 stops responding when you try to start the program by using the Dock Start menu or the Dock proxy program. When you use the Dock Start menu or the Dock proxy program to start Virtual PC for Mac 6.1.1, the program stops responding. To work around this issue, use the actual program icon or the alias.

For an optimal Virtual PC for Mac experience in the Mac OS X Tiger operating system, we recommend that Virtual PC for Mac 6.1.1 users purchase the upgrade to Virtual PC for Mac 7 (version 7.0.2). Version 7.0.2 contains the Tiger update.
