This article describes the Excel 2002 issue that is fixed in the Excel 2002 post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package that is dated May 25, 2005.

Issue that the hotfix package fixes
This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
- Consider the following scenario. You have two Excel 2002 workbooks that are located in separate shared folders on the same server. The first workbook has a link to some of the data that is contained in the second workbook.
Then, you create a new Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 presentation or a new Microsoft Word 2002 document in a different folder on the same server. In this new document, you add a link to the data that is contained in the first Excel workbook. Additionally, some of this data that is contained in the first Excel workbook is linked to the data that is contained in the second Excel workbook. When you close and then reopen the new PowerPoint 2002 presentation or the new Word 2002 document, the link to the data that is contained in the second Excel workbook is broken. If you view the path of the linked data in Excel 2002, the folder is missing from the file path.
For example, the mapped shared folder is \\Server\share\folder. Additionally, the file is located in the \\Server\share\folder\datafolder. When this issue occurs, the file path is displayed as follows:\\
Server\share\dataThis issue occurs if the shared folder is mapped to a drive letter. This issue does not occur if the root of the shared folder is mapped to a drive letter.
For example, this issue occurs if you mapped the following shared folder to a drive letter:\\
Server\share\folderHowever, this issue does not occur if you mapped the following root of the shared folder to a drive letter:
\\
Server\share

Prerequisites
- The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) hotfix. To install this version of the hotfix, you must have Office XP SP3 installed. For more information about Office XP SP3, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

- The optimized version of this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or a later version. For more information about the Windows Installer requirement, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
330537 Office XP updates and patches released after September 2002 may require Windows Installer 2.0
- The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix on a computer that is running Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). However, we have tested this hotfix on a computer that is running Office XP SP3 more extensively than we have on a computer that is running Office XP SP2. If you install this hotfix on a computer that is running Office XP SP2, some file conflicts may occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.

You do not have to restart the computer after you install this hotfix.
