SYMPTOMS

When you run a Microsoft Visual C++ application in Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003, you may receive the following error message:

[fatal error C1001: Internal compiler error]

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • The Visual C++ application includes a macro that has a string parameter.
  • The string parameter contains Japanese characters.

If the string parameter also contains a quotation mark, you may also receive the following error message:

[error C2001: newline in constant]

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio .NET 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
