INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 issues that are fixed in the hotfix package that is dated December 6, 2005.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issues.

  • 905303 Items are not sorted as expected when you are using a third-party mailbox store in Outlook 2003

  • 905872 You cannot use an IMAP client to limit the file size of the e-mail messages that you want to download in Outlook 2003

  • 907651 When you try to add lots of .pst files to your e-mail profile in Outlook 2003, some of the .pst files may not be added

  • 910374 You receive error messages when you send an e-mail message to a distribution list or when you try to update a distribution list in Outlook 2003

This hotfix package fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  • When you try to open a custom MAPI form in Outlook 2003, the form does not open. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

The custom form could not be opened. Outlook will use an Outlook form instead. A required action was not successful due to an unspecified error.

  • When you run a custom messaging client program that calls the ResolveMessageClass MAPI function programmatically, you receive the following error message:

Could not find handler for message class

    Code: MAPI_E_NOT_FOUND == 0x8004010F

This issue may occur if the Frmcache.dat file is missing or if the Frmcache.dat file has been deleted.

  • Consider the following scenario. You configure the Deliver new e-mail to the following location option so that new e-mail messages are delivered to an Outlook 2003 Personal Folders file (.pst). Then, you start Outlook 2003 by using the /CleanReminders command-line switch. In this scenario, reminders may not open. And, you receive the following error message:

Can not start the reminder service. Unable to show reminder.

Additionally, the following message is logged in the Application log:

    Outlook Warning event 25:
Can not start the reminder service. Unable to show reminder.

  • Consider the following scenario. You are using a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003. This computer has 4 gigabytes (GB) or more of RAM. You enable the Physical Address Extension command-line switch (/pae) in the Boot.ini file on this computer. Then, you start Outlook 2003 by using a profile that delivers new e-mail messages to a .pst file. In this scenario, Outlook quits unexpectedly. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to the following error signature:

Application name Application version Module name Module version Offset
    Outlook.exe 11.0.6353.0 Mspst32.dll 11.0.6357.0 0001b745
  • Consider the following scenario. You open an e-mail message that installs a custom IPM.NOTE form in Outlook 2003. Then, you run Outlook 2003 in Cached Exchange Mode when the computer is not connected to the network. Then, you reopen the e-mail message. In this scenario, the message is displayed using the default IPM.NOTE form. The custom IPM.NOTE form has been deleted from the computer.
  • You are using the Folder Assistant feature to add a rule. If you click Advanced, you cannot add the criteria for the rule. If you close the Advanced dialog box and then click Advanced again, the Advanced dialog box is not displayed. And, you receive the following error message:

The Advanced dialog box could not be displayed. There is not enough memory or system resources. Close some windows, and then try again.

Additionally, Outlook 2003 may quit unexpectedly. And, you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to the following error signature:

Application name Application version Module name Module version Offset
    Outlook.exe 11.0.6353.0 Outex.dll 11.0.6354.0 000774e1
  • When you try to synchronize your mailbox in Outlook 2003, only the Inbox is synchronized. The other folders that you have filtered for synchronization are not synchronized.
  • If you start Outlook 2003 when you are using an Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) e-mail account, you may be prompted for your user name and for your password in two separate logon dialog boxes.
  • When you run Outlook 2003 in Cached Exchange Mode, an automatic read receipt is not sent when you receive an e-mail message for which a read receipt has been requested. This issue may occur after you apply the hotfix that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    839647 Description of the Outlook 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package: September 9, 2004

  • When you work in Cached Exchange Mode in Outlook 2003, a newly added Microsoft Exchange Server offline address book (OAB) may not be listed in the Address Book dialog box.
  • When you add a telephone number to a contact in Outlook 2003, the area code or the city code is added to the telephone number that appears in the Local number box in the Check Phone Number dialog box. Additionally, the City/Area code box is blank. This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
    • In the Check Phone Number dialog box for the Outlook contact, you click Belgium in the Country/Region code box.
    • In Microsoft Windows XP, you click Belgium in the Country Region box when you configure dialing rules.
  • Outlook 2003 may take longer than expected to complete a task. For example, when you open the Calendar, the Calendar may take longer than expected to open. If you view the Outlook.exe and Services.exe processes in Task Manager, the processes may consume 100 percent of the processor time.

This issue may occur after you install Office 2003 Service Pack 2.
