SYMPTOMS
When you try to open a file by clicking a hyperlink on a Web page in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, the file may not open as expected.
This issue occurs if the following conditions are true:
- The file that you are trying to open is located on a local computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 (SP2).
- The Internet Explorer Zone Elevation Blocks feature detects the Mark of the Web comment (MOTW) in the HTML code of the Web page that you are viewing.
CAUSE
The Internet Explorer Zone Elevation Blocks feature is a new security feature in Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2). If the HTML code of the Web page that you are viewing contains the MOTW, the Internet Explorer Zone Elevation Blocks feature thinks that the Web page is located on the Internet. By default, the Internet Explorer Zone Elevation Blocks feature prevents you from accessing a file in a zone with tighter security restrictions. Therefore, when you try to open the file by clicking the hyperlink on the Web page, the Internet Explorer Zone Elevation Blocks feature prevents you from opening the file.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, put the file that you want other users to open into a folder that is located on Universal Naming Convention (UNC) shared resources.
