SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003, Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2005, or Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007, you may experience the following symptoms:
- When you run the rtcsrv.msi PREP=SCHEMA command to prepare the Active Directory schema for the installation of Live Communications Server 2003, you receive the following error message:
- You run the Live Communications Server 2005 Active Directory Schema Preparation Wizard to prepare the Active Directory schema for the installation of Live Communications Server 2005. The Active Directory Schema Preparation Wizard generates the following error message when the wizard finishes running:
If you click View Log, the following information is displayed:

[0x80070035] The network path was not found.
When you click Finish, you receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This issue occurs if one or both of the following conditions are true:
- The Remote Registry service is not running on the computer that holds the Schema Master operations master role.
Note Operations master roles are also known as flexible single master operations (FSMO) roles.
- Incorrect registry permissions are assigned on the computer that holds the Schema Master operations master role.

RESOLUTION
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Start the Remote Registry service if the service is stopped. To do this, follow these steps:
- On the computer that holds the Schema Master operations master role, click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
- In the list of services, double-click Remote Registry.
- In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.
- Click Start, and then click OK.
- Verify registry permissions on the computer that holds the Schema Master operations role. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\winreg
- On the Edit menu, click Permissions. The following minimum-level permissions are required:
Group or user name Permission Administrators Full Control LOCAL SERVICE Read - After you verify that the correct permissions have been assigned, click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.
- Restart the Live Communications Server Setup program to prepare the Active Directory schema.
