Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  • When you update a data source for a pivot table in an Excel 2003 workbook, Excel 2003 may unexpectedly quit. Additionally, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:

Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

To see what data this error report contains, click here.

When you view the data in the error report, the error report contains an error signature that is similar to the following:

Application name Application version Module name Module version Offset
       --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
       Excel.exe 11.0.6459.0 Excel.exe 11.0.6459.0 00c4469f

Additionally, other program versions, module versions, and offsets are possible.

This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:

    • There are two or more pivot tables in the workbook.
    • The pivot tables have distinct data connections.
    • The pivot tables contain calculated fields.
  • When you run a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro that calls a Workbook property in the WorkbookActivate event to open a data file, Excel 2003 unexpectedly quits. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

To see what data this error report contains, click here.

When you view the data in the error report, the error report contains an error signature that is similar to the following:

This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:

    • You open a worksheet that uses a Volatile function.
Note A volatile function must be recalculated whenever calculation occurs in any cells in the worksheet.
    • You run a VBA macro that uses the WorkbookActivate event to call a Workbook property, such as the Path property or the FullName property.
    • The VBA macro opens a non-Excel data file, such as a .csv file or a .txt file.
