This article describes the PowerPoint 2003 issue that is fixed in the PowerPoint 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated April 13, 2005.

Issue that the hotfix package fixes
This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
- When you open a presentation in PowerPoint 2003, some of the characters in a line of text may disappear. Or, some of the characters may appear to be overlapped by other characters. Additionally, text in a text box may wrap more tightly than expected. This causes the characters in the text to be crowded together.
This issue occurs because PowerPoint 2003 does not enumerate the fonts that are available on the computer until it is absolutely necessary. PowerPoint 2003 assumes that the fonts that are used in a presentation use standard widths and standard heights. If a font uses non-standard widths and non-standard heights, some of the characters in the font will be truncated, will disappear, or will wrap more tightly than expected.

- The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office 2003 SP1 installed. - The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Office 2003 SP1 installed or on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed. However, we have tested this hotfix more extensively on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Office 2003 SP1 installed than we have on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed. If you install this hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed, some file conflicts might occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
