Issue that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  • When you insert or type the Middle Dot character (ALT+0183) between letters or numbers in an Office XP document, the Middle Dot character is not center-aligned between the letters or the numbers.

This issue occurs when you use the Arial Narrow font. This issue may also be more noticeable when the view option to show spaces is turned on. The Middle Dot character is used by Microsoft Word 2002 as a formatting mark that represents a space character.

To turn on the view option to show spaces, follow these steps:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. On the View tab, under Formatting marks, click to select the Spaces check box.
    3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

Note On a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, this issue occurs after you install either of the following:

    • Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)
    • The security bulletin MS04-011 update that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

835732 MS04-011: Security Update for Microsoft Windows
