APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

SYMPTOMS

When you try to pass a string across remoting boundaries in the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may receive an exception error message that is similar to the following:

Unhandled Exception: System.Xml.XmlException: '♥', hexadecimal value 0x03, is an invalid character. Line 4, position 63.

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You make the call across remoting boundaries by using the HttpChannel class and the SoapFormatter class.
  • The passed string contains XML characters that are not valid.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the SoapFormatter class does not correctly encode special characters when it serialized the string according to the XML specification.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next .NET Framework 1.1 service pack that contains this hotfix.
