You cannot install software updates that have file names longer than 64 characters after you use the Distribute Software Update Wizard to import those software updates into Systems Management Server 2003

Article ID: 892303

Article Last Modified on 10/25/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You use the following Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 update deployment strategy:

  • You use Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to scan destination computers for required software updates.
  • You use the Distribute Software Update Wizard (DSUW) Import option to import the required software updates to SMS 2003.
  • You use SMS 2003 to deploy the required software updates to the destination computers.

In this scenario, you cannot install software updates that have file names with more than 64 characters.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a limitation in the Distribute Software Update Wizard. When you try to import a file that has more than 64 characters in the file name, the Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) CFileDialog::GetFileName function truncates the name to 64 characters. When you deploy this update to a destination computer, the Windows Update agent on that computer is unable to install the update. This is because of a hash verification failure that results from the truncated file name.
