Bug #: 20000121 (SQL Server 8.0)

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2000 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 fix release.

SUMMARY

This article describes the following about this hotfix release:

  • The issues that are fixed by this hotfix package
  • The prerequisites for installing the hotfix package
  • Whether you must restart the computer after you install the hotfix package
  • Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package
  • Whether you must make any registry changes
  • The files that are contained in the hotfix package

SYMPTOMS

When you try to parse a query in Microsoft SQL Server 2000, you notice that the query runs slower than you expected. This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:

  • Your query is based on a view that contains many aggregate functions.
  • You have a filter condition on your query that is based on an IN list that has many values.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one or more of the following methods:

  • Perform your query against the base table instead of against the view.
  • Reduce the number of values in the IN list.
  • Reduce the number of aggregate functions.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install this hotfix, you can use trace flag 221 to change the SQL Server behavior. To enable trace flag 221 so that it is turned on whenever SQL Server starts, add the trace flag as a SQL Server startup parameter. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In SQL Server Enterprise Manager, right-click Server Name, and then click Properties.

Note Server Name is a placeholder for the name of the server that is running SQL Server.

  1. On the General tab, click Startup Parameters.
  2. In the Parameter text box, type -T221, click Add, and then click OK.
  3. In the SQL Server Properties (Configure) - Server Name dialog box, click OK.
  4. Restart the SQL Server service for the new parameter to take effect.

Alternatively, run the following query in SQL Query Analyzer to dynamically turn on the trace flag.

DBCC TRACEON (221, -1)

However, if you do not add trace flag 221 as a SQL Server startup parameter, the effect of the DBCC TRACEON command is lost when the SQL Server service restarts.

A more efficient way to deal with large IN lists is to insert the IN list values into a temporary table. Then, remove the IN list from the query, and join the temporary table to the table.
