SYMPTOMS

When you use the PUT command together with the WebDAV PROPATCH method to work with messages in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you experience the following symptom. When you first run the PUT command followed by the PROPATCH method, the message size that appears is correct. However, after you run the PUT command again to modify that particular message, the message size that appears is not correct.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a calculation error in Exchange 2003 SP1. When you modify a message by using the PUT command, the message overwrite operation converts the message to MIME format. When you run the PROPATCH method to modify this message, the PROPATCH method causes the message to be converted from MIME format to MAPI. After this conversion is finished, the message size that appears is correct. However, when you run the PUT command again to perform a MIME overwrite operation to modify this message, the message is converted from MAPI to MIME format. During this message conversion operation, the message size is incorrectly calculated. In this situation, the message size is incorrectly increased by the size of the message body after each PUT command and PROPATCH method combination.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install this hotfix, message sizes are correctly calculated when you modify messages by using the PUT command together with the PROPATCH method.

Important This hotfix does not restore message sizes that have been incorrectly calculated by Exchange when you previously used the PUT command together with the PROPATCH method. For example, consider the following example scenario:

  1. You run a program that uses the PUT command together with the PROPATCH method to modify a message that has a file size of 504 bytes.
  2. The message size is incorrectly calculated and set to 2048 bytes.
  3. You install the hotfix that is mentioned in this article.
  4. You again run the program to modify this message.

In this situation, the message size is not reset to 504 bytes. The message size remains at 2048 bytes. However, the message size no longer incorrectly increases.
