SUMMARY

This article describes problems that you are likely to experience after you install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on a server that is running Microsoft Application Center 2000. It also describes the hotfix that you must apply to resolve those problems.

Note Although the hotfix does not prompt for a reboot after installation, one is required.

Notice

A new version of this hotfix has been issued. The new version addresses additional issues that occur after you apply Windows Server 2003 SP1 on servers that are running Application Center 2000. If you have version 1.0.781.15 of the FixAcw2k3sp1.exe file in the Application Center directory, you may have to reinstall this hotfix. You do not have to remove the previous version of the hotfix. However, if you remove the previous version, remove the server from the cluster before you use Add or Remove programs to remove the previous version.

SYMPTOMS

If Application Center 2000 exists on a server that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1, you experience one or more of the following problems:

• When you try to connect to Localhost, you receive the following error message in your browser:

  C014006d (cannot connect to server)

  Additionally, the following error is logged in the System log:

  Event ID 10010
  Source: DCOM
  The server {200691B9-C444-4089-8C61-247621196B15} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout

• When you try to add a member to the cluster, the wizard fails. When this problem occurs, you receive the following error message:

  C014006d

  Additionally, the following error is logged in the System log on the member:

  Event ID:10010
  Source: DCOM
  The server {200691B9-C444-4089-8C61-247621196B15} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

• In the Application Center Management Console, the Member status and the Health Monitor status appear as "unknown."

• The following error may be logged in the Application log:

  Event ID: 5031
  Source: Application Center
  Class: MicrosoftAC_Replication_Session_Authentication_ConFailed_Event
  Status: 0x80070005
  StatusMessage: Access is denied.
  DisplayName: Replication Session Authentication ConFailed
  

• When you try to designate a new cluster controller, the operation fails. When this problem occurs, you receive the following error message:

  Unable to designate xxx as the cluster controller. The server is currently disabled. (0x8997053d).

  Additionally, the following error is logged in the Application log:

  Event Id: 4021
  Source: Application Center
  CLASS: MicrosoftAC_Cluster_Controller_ChangeFailed_Event
  Status: 0x8007053d
  StatusMessage: The server is currently disabled.
  DisplayName: Cluster Controller ChangeFailed

• Microsoft COM+ applications that should be instantiated on the Component Load Balancing (CLB) cluster are instead instantiated locally.

• The Restart IIS option on the All tasks server menu fails, and you receive the following error message:

  Class Not registered

  The following error message may be logged in the application event log:

  Event ID: 1023
  Source: Perflib
  Description: Windows cannot load extensible counter DLL MSSQL$MSAC, the first DWORD in data section is the Windows error code.

This hotfix automates the security changes that are required for Microsoft Application Center 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) to run on a Windows Server 2003 SP1-based server.

The following list describes the security changes that are made by this hotfix.

• The Network Service account is added to the ACA_ComputerName group.
• In Component Services, the following changes are made:
  • In the Default Com Security tab of the Properties dialog box in My Computer, the following changes are made:
    • The limits of the Access Permissions section are changed to enable Remote Access and Local Access permissions for Anonymous Logon.
    • The limits of the Launch Permissions section are changed to enable all permissions for the ACA_ComputerName group.
  • The Enforce access checks for this application section is disabled in the AC Load Balancer application.
• Read access permission is granted to the Network Service account on the following registry key:

  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Application Center Server\ClbEvent

• Full Control permission is granted to the Network Service accounts on the following registry keys:

  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\COM3\Local Computer

  HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application\CLBService

• The FixACW2k3SP1.exe file is left behind.
• Read access permission is granted to the ACA_ComputerName group on the following registry key:
  
  HKCR\CLSID\{CD210036-AC0A-43AD-808C-1D0AEAFFCC50}
  
  If you installed the Event and Perfomance logging option, read access permissions and execute access permissions are granted to the Everyone group on the MSSQL$MSAC\Binn\sqlctr80.dll file. The Event and Perfomance logging option is the default option.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
