SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Access 2000, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following message when you click the Tools menu or when you point to Toolbars on the View menu:

This program has performed an illegal operation. Invalid page fault in module MSACCESS.EXE at 017f:300ed997

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following registry subkey is damaged:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Access\Settings\CommandBars


RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, re-create the CommandBars registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Exit Access 2000.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Access\Settings\CommandBars

  4. Right-click CommandBars, and then click Rename.
  5. Type CommandBars1, and then press ENTER to rename the CommandBars registry subkey.
  6. Exit Registry Editor.

    Note The CommandBars registry subkey is automatically re-created the next time that you start Access 2000.
  7. Start Access 2000.
