SYMPTOMS
When a Transact-SQL statement is executed by using a parallel execution plan, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 may not set the value of the @@ERROR system function correctly when the Transact-SQL statement fails or when SQL Server detects an error. If you examine the value that is returned by the @@ERROR system function immediately after the Transact-SQL statement executes, you will see that the @@ERROR function returned a zero value even though the query caused a non-zero error.
For example, the following Transact-SQL statement may still execute the DELETE statement even though the INSERT statement fails when it uses a parallel execution plan:
INSERT INTO table2 SELECT * FROM table1 IF ( @@ERROR = 0 ) DELETE FROM table1
Note Parallel execution plans only occur on instances of SQL Server that are running on a computer that has two or more logical processors.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
- ==== Use a query hint ====
Add the query hint OPTION (MAXDOP 1) to prevent the SELECT statement from using a parallel execution plan.
- ==== Use the sp_configure system stored procedure ====
Run the sp_configure system stored procedure to set the max degree of parallelism option to 1 for the instance of SQL Server. To set the max degree of parallelism option, run the following Transact-SQL statement on the instance of SQL Server that you want to change:
exec sp_configure 'max degree of parallelism',1 GO RECONFIGURE GO
NOTE We do not recommend this because it may affect performance.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.
