APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office X for Mac Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Entourage X for Mac
  • Microsoft Excel X for Mac
  • Microsoft PowerPoint X for Mac
  • Microsoft Word X for Mac

SYMPTOMS

Every time that you start a stand-alone Microsoft Office X for Mac program, you may be prompted to enter your name, your organization, and the CD-key for the program.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you install two stand-alone versions of an Office X for Mac program, such as Microsoft Word X for Mac and PowerPoint X for Mac, on the same computer. The program that you installed first will run as expected. However, the program that you installed second will prompt you for your name, your organization, and the CD-key for the program every time that you start the program.

Note This behavior occurs if you installed the stand-alone Office X program by using the Microsoft Installer program, or if you installed the stand-alone Office X program by dropping the stand-alone Office X programs on to your hard disk drive.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must remove both stand-alone Office X programs from your computer and then reinstall the two stand-alone Office X programs. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Quit both stand-alone Office X programs.
  2. Use the Remove Office utility to remove both stand-alone Office X programs from your computer.

  3. Click Applications on the Go menu. This opens the Applications folder on your computer.
  4. Insert the CD for the first stand-alone Office X program in your CD or DVD drive.
  5. Drag the Microsoft Office X folder to the Applications folder.
  6. Rename the Microsoft Office X folder to Microsoft First_Program_name X.
  7. Eject the CD, and then insert the CD for the second stand-alone Office X program in your CD or DVD drive.
  8. Drag the Microsoft Office X folder to the Applications folder.
  9. Rename the Microsoft Office X folder to Microsoft Second_Program_name X.
  10. Start the first stand-alone Office X program, and then type your name, your organization, and the CD-key for that program.
  11. Quit the stand-alone Office X program.
  12. Start the second Office X program from the CD.
  13. Type your name, your organization, and the CD-key for that program.
  14. Quit the second program, and eject the CD.
  15. Start the second stand-alone Office X program in the Applications folder.

Both stand-alone Office X programs will start without prompting you for your user information or your CD-key.
