Unexpected display resolutions appear for the NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go video adapter in Windows XP Service Pack 2

Article ID: 890601

Article Last Modified on 12/18/2004

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), or when you install the Microsoft driver for your NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go video adapter, unexpected display resolutions may be available on the Settings tab in the Display properties dialog box. For example, a default resolution of 969 x 768 is available instead of the expected default resolution of 1024 x 768. Or, a maximum resolution of 1372 x 1050 is available instead of the expected maximum resolution of 1400 x 1050.

Therefore, your whole display may not be used. Additionally, part of the display may show a black stripe.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you use the Microsoft version of the NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go driver.

Note Windows XP SP2 will not automatically upgrade the driver to the Microsoft version of the driver if the OEM version of the driver is already installed. However, the Microsoft version of the driver may be installed if all the following conditions are true:

  • After you install Windows XP SP2, you use the Update Driver option to update the driver for this device.
  • The Microsoft version of the driver is more recent than the OEM version of the driver.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use either of the following methods, as appropriate:

  • Use the Rollback feature in Windows XP to restore the driver. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, click Manage.
    2. Click Device Manager in the left pane.
    3. Right-click the listing for the NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go video adapter, and then click Properties.
    4. Click the Driver tab, and then click Rollback.
  • Install the latest drivers for your video adapter. Contact the manufacturer of your hardware to obtain the latest drivers.
