SYMPTOMS

When you print a document that contains ActiveX controls in Microsoft Word 2002 Service Pack 3 (SP3), the first line of text and the ActiveX controls in some paragraphs may print two times.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • The paragraphs in the document are formatted with spacing before and after each paragraph.
  • The paragraph that comes before the text that prints two times is formatted as hidden text.
  • The paragraph that contains the text that prints two times and the previous paragraph both have ActiveX controls, such as a check box, next to them.
  • The ActiveX controls are not anchored to the paragraph that they are next to. Instead, the ActiveX controls are anchored to the previous paragraph.
  • Styles in the document are applied by using a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications macro.


RESOLUTION

How to obtain the hotfix

This issue is fixed in the Word 2002 post-Service Pack 3 Hotfix Package that is dated November 19, 2004. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

After you install this hotfix, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section of this article to set the SmartLongTablesLayout registry key and to activate the hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

To enable this hotfix, follow these steps:

  1. Quit Word 2002.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click to select the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Options

  4. After you select the key that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
  5. Type SmartLongTablesLayout, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click SmartLongTablesLayout, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
