You cannot use the mouse or the keyboard when you repair a guest operating system in Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1

Article ID: 889511

Article Last Modified on 12/7/2004

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1

SYMPTOMS

You try to repair the guest operating system on a virtual machine in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1 (SP1). When you restart the operating system, the virtual machine and the guest operating system no longer recognize the mouse and the keyboard.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must use Recovery Console to enable the mouse and keyboard services. To do this, you must have previously captured an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) CD image or a physical CD that contains the Windows Setup program for Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional or for Microsoft Windows XP . Alternatively, you must have installed Recovery Console to the guest operating system. Otherwise, you will not be able to restore the guest operating system on the virtual machine.

Note You may not be able to start a virtual machine in Virtual PC 2004 SP1 from a third-party startup CD or from an ISO file that contains a third-party startup CD image. For additional information about third-party startup CDs, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To use Recovery Console, follow these steps:

Note The following steps assume that you have captured the physical CD drive and that you have the Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup CD or the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Setup CD inserted into the CD drive or the DVD drive.
Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Close the virtual machine window.
  2. In the list on the Virtual PC Console, click the virtual machine.
  3. Click Start, and then press and hold the R key until the Recovery Console starts.
  4. You will receive a message that is similar to the following:
