SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Microsoft Office 2000 or Microsoft Office XP to Microsoft Office 2003, some Office 2000 shortcuts or Office XP shortcuts may still appear in the Start menu. For example, the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar shortcut may still appear in the Start menu under Microsoft Office. However, no action occurs when you click the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar shortcut.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the global .opc file (Oclncore.opc) does not remove all Office 2000 shortcuts or all Office XP shortcuts.

The Oclncore.opc file is one of the Office 2003 installation files. It is used by the Office 2003 installation process to remove unnecessary or obsolete components from previously installed versions of Office and related applications.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, modify the Oclncore.opc file so that all Office 2000 shortcuts and all Office XP shortcuts are removed during the installation process. You can modify the Oclncore.opc file for the following installation methods:

  • You install Office 2003 by using an administrative installation point.
  • You install Office 2003 by using a copy of the installation CD on a computer network.

Note If you upgrade to Office 2003 from Office 2000 or Office XP by inserting the Office 2003 installation CD into your CD drive, you cannot modify the Oclncore.opc file. After you upgrade to Office 2003 by using the installation CD, you can manually remove any Office 2000 shortcuts or Office XP shortcuts that remain on your computer.

To modify the Oclncore.opc file, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Locate the Oclncore.opc file. If Office 2003 is installed from an administrative installation point, the Oclncore.opc file is located in the following directory:

    administrative_installation_point_location\FILES\PFILES\MSOFFICE\OFFICE11

  2. Make a backup copy of the Oclncore.opc file, and name the copy of the file Oclncore.backup.
  3. Make changes to the Oclncore.opc file.
    1. Right-click Oclncore.opc, click Open with, and then click Open with again.
    2. Select Select a program from a list, and then click OK.
    3. In the list of programs, click WordPad, and then click OK.
    4. On the Edit menu, click Find, type the following text, and then click Find Next:

      [SAFE, ACCESS9, EXCEL9, FRONTPAGE9, OUTLOOK9, POWERPOINT9, PUBLISHER9, SBT9, WORD9] "Microsoft Office 2000"

    5. Locate the following lines under the line that you found in the previous step:
