You cannot create an alternative installation source for Office 2003 by using the Custom Installation Wizard

Article ID: 889496

Article Last Modified on 3/19/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003
  • Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003
  • Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003

SYMPTOMS

Suppose that you create an alternative installation source for Office 2003 by using the Custom Installation Wizard for the Microsoft Office 2003 Setup program. To do this, you add a mapped address or a UNC address for a network share as an alternative source. You do this on page 14 of the Custom Installation Wizard. In this scenario, the alternative source is not written to the following registry subkey:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\{ProductGUID}\SourceList

This problem will affect the resiliency of the Windows Installer and of the Office Source Engine if you manually delete the MSOCache folder from your computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you have enabled the Setup feature that is named Local Install Source. When it is enabled, the Local Install Source feature controls source management from the Windows Installer. The Local Install Source feature also lets you delete or rename the MSOCache folder. However, Office 2003 does not support the deleting or the renaming of the MSOCache folder, because the custom actions in the Office 2003 Setup program assume that MSOCache folder exists. If the folder is no longer available, the alternative source that you specified in the Custom Installation Wizard is not written to the registry subkey that is described in the Symptoms section.

Additionally, a network drive will not be recognized as a valid location for the local installation source. This is true whether it is a mapped address or a UNC address. You must use a local hard disk or a partition for the local installation source.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the latest service pack for Office 2003 on the Office 2003 client. For more information about how to obtain and install the latest service pack for Office 2003, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1.
