The operating system version information for some discovered computers may not be included in the results when you use Network Discovery to discover computers after you install SMS 2003

Article ID: 889033

Article Last Modified on 10/27/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 in Advanced Security mode and then you use Network Discovery to discover computers, the operating system version information for some discovered computers may not be included in the results.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when a discovered computer uses the RestrictAnonymous=1 setting. SMS 2003 Advanced Security mode does not use the network abstraction layer (NAL) for authentication. Therefore, Network Discovery only makes anonymous connections.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use an alternative method in SMS 2003 to discover computers. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
  2. In the SMS Administrator Console, expand Site Database(SiteCode-SiteName), expand Site Hierarchy, expand SiteCode-SiteName, expand Site Settings, and then click Discovery Methods.
  3. In the details pane, double-click an alternative method to discover computers. For example, double-click Active Directory System Discovery.
  4. In the AlternativeMethod Properties dialog box, click the General tab, click to select the Enable AlternativeMethod check box, and then click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
