256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

INTRODUCTION

The country of Uruguay has scheduled a modified daylight-saving time program for 2004 and 2005. This modified daylight-saving time program is different from the daylight-saving time program that applies to the default time zone that is used for Uruguay in Microsoft Windows operating systems. The default time zone for Uruguay is Brasilia -3:00. The daylight-saving time program for the Brasilia -3:00 time zone is:

  • Daylight-saving time starts at 2:00 A.M. on the third Sunday of October 2004. The third Sunday of October 2004 is October 17, 2004.
  • Daylight-saving time ends at 2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday of February 2005. The second Sunday of February 2005 is February 8, 2005.

The new daylight-saving time program in Uruguay is:

  • daylight-saving time starts at 2:00 A.M. on the third Sunday of September 2004. The third Sunday of September 2004 is September 19, 2004.
  • daylight-saving time ends at 2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday of March 2005. The second Sunday of March 2005 is March 13, 2005.

Because this is a new daylight-saving time program in Uruguay, computers that are running a Microsoft Windows operating system do not adjust the time zone to reflect the change to daylight-saving time. This step-by-step article describes how to change the default behavior of the Uruguay time zone.

MORE INFORMATION

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Method 1: Use the Tzedit.exe utility to manually modify the time zone

Use the Tzedit.exe utility to adjust the start and the end dates for daylight-saving time in the Uruguay time zone. The Tzedit.exe utility is available on any Microsoft Windows Resource Kit. To use this method, you must obtain the Tzedit.exe utility from the resource kit for your version of Windows. For more information about the Windows resource kits, visit the Microsoft Windows Deployment and Resource Kits Web site:

To adjust the start and the end dates for daylight-saving time in the Uruguay time zone, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows Resource Kit, and then click Tools.
  2. Double-click Alphabetical list of Tools, and then click Time Zone Editor.
  3. Click New, and then type (GMT-03:00) Montevideo in the Time Zone Name box.
  4. In the Abbreviation box, type Montevideo Uruguay.
  5. In the Offset from GMT box, type -3:00.
  6. Click to select the Automatically set daylight-saving time check box.
  7. Follow these steps:
    1. In the first Start Day box, click Third.
    2. In the second Start Day box, click Sunday.
    3. In the third Start Day box, click September.
    4. In the fourth Start Day box, click 2:00 AM.
    5. In the first Last Day box, click Second.
    6. In the second Last Day box, click Sunday.
    7. In the third Last Day box, click March.
    8. In the fourth Last Day box, click 2:00 AM.
    9. In the Abbreviation box, type Horario de Verano.
    10. In the Daylight Bias box, click +1:00 to set the clock forward 1 hour. By default, Daylight Bias is set to +1:00.
  8. Click OK, and then quit Windows Time Zone Editor.
  9. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  10. Double-click Date/Time, and then click the Time Zone tab.
  11. Click (GMT -3:00) Montevideo, and then click OK.
  12. Click to select the Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes check box, click Apply, and then click OK.
  13. To test that the new time zone setting will adjust for daylight savings as expected, change the time and date on your computer to several minutes before the time that you have set for the daylight-saving time changes. Verify that the daylight-saving time changes are correct when the change occurs.

Method 2: Run Timezones.reg and Tzinfo.reg files to change the daylight-saving time on another computer

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Follow the steps in the "Method 1: Use the Tzedit.exe utility to manually modify the time zone" section to modify the daylight-saving time start and end dates for the Montevideo time zone. After you have completed Method 1 on one computer, you can use the Timezones.reg and Tzinfo.reg files to change the time zone on another computer. To do this, follow the steps for your operating system.
