The following issues have been fixed in Windows XP SP2 and in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005:

Blind carbon copy (Bcc) e-mail aliases are included in message header information

When you send an e-mail message in Outlook Express that contains an e-mail alias in the Bcc box, the Bcc e-mail alias may be included in the header information of the message. This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:

  • The e-mail message was created from a multi-part form.
  • The e-mail message includes an attachment.
Outlook Express quits unexpectedly with an error message in the module

Outlook Express may quit unexpectedly, and you may receive the following error message:

Microsoft Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Internet Explorer quits unexpectedly when it opens a Web archive that was saved in Outlook Express

When you open a Web archive (.mht) file that contains a multi-part form that was saved in Outlook Express in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer may quit unexpectedly

Clicking the Inbox in your Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) folder causes Outlook Express to quit unexpectedly

When you click the Inbox in your IMAP folder, Outlook Express may quit unexpectedly with an error message in module Pstprx32.dll.

Word-wrapping of text is incorrect when you read messages in a newsgroup

When you read messages in a newsgroup, the text that follows angle brackets (">") are not correctly word-wrapped to the next line.

Outlook Express may stop responding when you try to quit while your e-mail database is being compacted

If you quit Outlook Express while your e-mail database is being compacted, Outlook Express may stop responding, and your e-mail database (.dbx) file may be corrupted.

Replies to newsgroup messages are added to the top of your message, or the signature is added under the reply text, or both

When you post a reply to a newsgroup message in Outlook Express, one or both of the following conditions occur:

  • Your reply is automatically added to the top of the newsgroup message.
  • Your signature is added under your reply text.

To change this functionality after you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you must activate the hotfix that is included in Windows XP SP2. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Quit Outlook Express.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. To add your reply to the end of the newsgroup message, follow these steps:
    1. Locate and then click the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{999C2D60-D066-425C-8F75-FDE592BFCE2A}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0

    2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
    3. Type Reply At End, and then press ENTER.
    4. Right-click Reply At End, and then click Modify.
    5. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  4. To add your signature to the end of the newsgroup message, follow these steps:
    1. Locate and then click the following registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{999C2D60-D066-425C-8F75-FDE592BFCE2A}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0\signatures\00000000

    2. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
    3. Type end, and then press ENTER.
    4. Right-click end, and then click Modify.
    5. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
Many MIME parts in an e-mail message causes Outlook Express to stop responding or quit unexpectedly

When you open an e-mail message that contains many MIME parts, or more than 1,000 bytes, Outlook Express may stop responding or quit unexpectedly.

Attachments with long file names may be unreadable in the Open Attachment Warning dialog box

You open a file attachment to an e-mail message in Outlook Express. If that attachment has a long file name that contains white space, the end of the file name may be unreadable in the Open Attachment Warning dialog box.

Plain-text messages are now loaded with the Rich Edit control

When you view a plain-text message in Outlook Express in Windows XP SP2, the message will load by using the Rich Edit control instead of by using Mshtml.dll.

Pictures in an HTML e-mail message causes the modem to connect to the Internet to download the pictures

While you are offline, when you open a HTML e-mail message that contains pictures, your modem dials out to connect to the Internet to download the pictures that are in the message.

An Application Programming Interface (API) for safer handling of e-mail attachments is now included

An API is now included in Windows XP SP2 to provide the same e-mail attachment functionality as in Microsoft Office Outlook.

An ActiveX control in an HTML e-mail message could download an executable file

After you set Outlook Express security to the Internet Zone, and then you open an HTML e-mail message that contains an ActiveX control, an executable file could be downloaded to your computer. To set Outlook Express security to the Internet Zone, click Options on the Tools menu, and then click Security.

Access to Windows Messenger is not disabled after you disabling access to Outlook Express in the "Set Program Access and Defaults" feature

When you choose to disable access to Outlook Express in the Set Program Access and Defaults feature in Windows XP, access to Windows Messenger is not disabled.

An in-line frame (IFRAME) tag in an HTML e-mail message could redirect the window in Outlook Express

When you open an HTML e-mail message that contains an IFRAME tag, a window could open that redirects the window to a local file on your computer.
