An Office update package cannot be installed on the SMS 2003 client computer successfully if Office on the client is installed as a per-user installation

Article ID: 886022

Article Last Modified on 2/7/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

You cannot install the Microsoft Office update package on a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 client computer successfully if you distribute the update by using the SMS 2003 Distribute Software Updates wizard. The client computer receives no error message. The SMS Administrator console on the SMS site server shows the status of the advertisement for "Message Name" as "Program completed with success."

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You used the Just me installation option. This option provides a per-user installation.

For example, you used the following Windows Installer command to install Microsoft Office XP to the current user:

    msiexec /ju c:\officexp\proplus.msi

Or, you used Group Policy to deploy Office. For more information about how to use Group Policy to deploy Office, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

  • You used the Distribute Software Updates wizard to distribute the Office update package to the SMS client computers.

This issue occurs because the Microsoft Office Inventory Scan Tool for Updates does not support Office when Office is installed by using a per-user installation. The scanning tool cannot find any current installation of Office. Therefore, the scanning tool does not try to install any Office updates.

Note You can find the similar explanation in the OfficeUpdInventRelNotes.htm file in the folder where you installed the Office Inventory Scan Tool for Updates.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, install Office by using a per-machine installation. For more information about per-user installations or about per-machine installations, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION
