SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (Store.exe) may unexpectedly quit on a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. In this scenario, if you have the correct symbols installed and if you view the contents of the User.dmp file or the Drwtsn32.log file, you determine that the the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service process quits in the EcAIFromCAI() function of the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service.

If you move the mailbox that is associated with this stack output to a different Exchange computer, you may no longer experience this problem.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if an incorrect byte count is calculated and then permitted to be used in the EcAIFromCAI() function call. This function call copies memory by using that byte count. If the byte count is incorrect, information may be copied to a location that does not permit write access. Therefore, an access violation may occur in the the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service process.
