SYMPTOMS
You use the Russian keyboard to type text in a Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 presentation. Then, you save, close, and reopen the presentation. The text that you typed in a Russian TrueType font is now in the Simsun font.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- The Chinese language is configured as the default language for Microsoft Office 2003.
- You switched to the Russian keyboard layout without switching to the Russian language.
PowerPoint 2003 does not correctly enumerate the Russian TrueType font. When you save the presentation, PowerPoint 2003 enumerates the font as an Asian font. Therefore, the program assigns the default Simsun font to the text that you typed in a Russian TrueType font.
RESOLUTION
This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.
Service pack information
This problem is corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.

After you install this hotfix, follow the steps that are listed in the "More Information" section of this article to set the PPTClearCompositeFont registry key and to activate the hotfix.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.
MORE INFORMATION
To enable this hotfix, follow these steps:
- Quit PowerPoint 2003.
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click to select the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\PowerPoint\Options
- After you select the key that is specified in step 3, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type PPTClearCompositeFont, and then press ENTER.
- Right-click PPTClearCompositeFont, and then click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
- On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
Restore affected presentations
After you install this hotfix and set the registry entry to enable the hotfix, you can restore presentations that are affected by this problem.
To restore presentations, follow these steps:
- Start PowerPoint 2003.
- On the Tools menu, click Options, click Save, click to clear the Allow fast saves check box, and then click OK.
- Open a presentation that is affected.
- Make a minor change to the presentation. For example, add a blank space in the Notes section of the presentation.
- On the File menu, click Save, and then click Close.
- Repeat steps 3 through 5 for additional presentations.
When you open these presentations again, the correct font is displayed.
