Microsoft has released the Word 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package for Microsoft Office Word 2003. This article describes the following items about the hotfix package:

INTRODUCTION
This article describes the Microsoft Office Word 2003 issues that are fixed in the Word 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated September 9, 2004.

Issues that are fixed in the hotfix package
This hotfix package fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
When you programmatically activate an embedded Word 2003 document that is contained in another Microsoft Office 2003 program and run a macro that makes a change to the embedded Word 2003 document by using the Border object or the Borders collection, you receive the following error message:
Note This issue occurs when you first start Word 2003 without an active document and the embedded Word 2003 document is opened in a stand-alone window.
When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to the following:Application name Application version Module name Module version Offset ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Winword.exe 11.0.5604.0 Winword.exe 11.0.5604.0 00151e62
- After you quit Word 2003, Word may still be loaded in memory. Additionally, if you view the Processes tab in Task Manager, you may find that Word 2003 is using 100 percent of the CPU time.
This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:- You start Word 2003 without an active document.
- You programmatically activate an embedded Word 2003 document that is contained in a document in another Office 2003 program.
- The embedded Word 2003 document is opened for "in-place" editing in the other Office 2003 program.
- You run a macro that makes a change to the embedded Word 2003 document by using the Border object or the Borders collection.
- When you open a document that was sent as an attachment to an e-mail message from Word 2003 on a computer that has an earlier version of Microsoft Office installed, you receive one of the following error messages:
This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:
- You use Information Rights Management (IRM) on Word 2003 document that is sent as an attachment.
- You have the Rights Management Add-on for Microsoft Internet Explorer installed on the computer that does not have Office 2003 installed.
- You open the e-mail attachment on a computer that does not have Office 2003 installed.

Prerequisites
The following list contains prerequisites for the hotfix package:
- The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office 2003 SP1 installed.

- The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 with SP1 installed or without SP1 installed. However, we have tested this hotfix more extensively on Office 2003 with SP1 than we have on Office 2003 without SP1. If you install this hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 without SP1, some file conflicts might occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
Restart information
You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.
