APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition (32-bit x86)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Web Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems

SYMPTOMS

When you try to configure a Common Gateway Interface (CGI) wildcard application mapping in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, the wildcard mapping is unsuccessful and the CGI application does not intercept every request. When a client makes a request for a Web resource and the mapping is unsuccessful, the client browser may receive a "404 Not Found" error message.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because IIS 6.0 does not support CGI wildcard application mapping. Applications that use wildcard application mapping can only be Internet Server API (ISAPI) applications.
