SYMPTOMS

You are trying to view the error code that is associated with a failed installation on the Review your update history page of the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or of the Microsoft Update Web site. When you click Failed in the Status column, the site home page appears unexpectedly in the main frame of the Review your update history page.

Note When you click Failed in the Status column of a failed installation attempt that is listed on the Review your update history page, you expect the error code to appear.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Urlmon.dll file is missing or not registered correctly. The Urlmon.dll file is typically located in the Drive:\Windows\System32 folder. Drive is the drive where Windows is installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.

Note If you receive a "The specified file does not exist" error message, expand the original file from your Windows CD. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then click OK:

    expand CD_drive:\I386\urlmon.dl_ hard_disk_drive:\Windows\System32\Urlmon.dll

  2. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
