A user who logs on to a Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Web site by using anonymous access cannot view a document that is checked out by another user

Article ID: 883506

Article Last Modified on 10/18/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

A user logs on to a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Web site by using anonymous access. When the user browses to a document library and then clicks a document that is checked out by another user, the document does not open. Instead, a Connect to ServerName dialog box is displayed on the screen, and the user is prompted to enter a user name and password.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because a user who logs on to the Web site by using anonymous access cannot open or view a document in a document library if that document is already checked out by another user.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, do one or more of the following, depending on your situation:

  • Assign a Windows user account to the users who have anonymous access. The users can log on to the Web site by using the Windows user account.
  • Instruct users not to check out documents.
  • Instruct users to only check out a document when they have to and then to check in the document immediately after they finish working with it.
