SYMPTOMS
When you try to import data from a text file or from a Microsoft Excel worksheet into Microsoft Access 2002, you cannot rename or modify a field in the Import Wizard.
CAUSE
This problem occurs after you install Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).
RESOLUTION
How to obtain the hotfix

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
- Rename the field names by using the Advance import file settings if the source is a text file.
- Rename the field names in Microsoft Excel if the source is an Excel worksheet.
Import data from a text file
- Start Access 2002, and then open your database.
- On the File menu, click Get External Data, and then click Import.
- In the Import dialog box, select Text Files (*.txt;*.cvs;*.tab;*.acs) for the Files of type.
- Select the text file that you want to import, and then click Import.
- Click Delimited or click Fix Width, and then click Advanced.
- In the Field Information table, type the new field names that you want to rename, and then click OK.
- Follow the remaining steps that appear in the Import Text Wizard.
Import data from an Excel worksheet
When you import data from an Excel worksheet, rename the field names in Excel to the field names that you want in Access 2002, and then import the data from the Excel worksheet into Access 2002 with the correct field names.
To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Access 2002, and then open your database.
- On the File menu, click Get External Data, and then click Import.
- In the Import dialog box, select Microsoft Excel (*.xls) for the Files of type.
- Select the Excel worksheet that you want to import, and then click Import
- Follow the remaining steps that appear in the Import Spreadsheet Wizard.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
